Jeffrey B. Irby

Tax Audit Lawyer

As an Alabama native, one life lesson that has stuck with me since growing up in Madison County is the significance of helping others in need. From an early age, I wanted to find a way to use my strengths to give back and help improve the community around me. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to use my knowledge and legal skill to help people through some really difficult times. No matter what issues they may be facing, I do my best to stand with my clients, help them understand what they’re up against, and inform them about all of the options they have available.

Outside of the office, I strive to maintain regular community support and service, as I believe that giving back to the community is vital for our common goal as citizens. Since earning my J.D., I pride myself on being a leader who can be counted on. Having worked as a Board of Director with CASA -North Alabama dba Enable Madison County, Family Services of North Alabama and LIFT Housing, I have a unique perspective and know of community resources to help families in need.

I completed my first triathlon in 2003, racing with Team in Training, raising money for the American Cancer Society. Through the ups and downs of life, I continued triathlon training and ultimately finished two 140.6 full, Ironman-distance triathlons in 2012 and 2013. My heroes are all the leaders, veterans and public servants who put the best interests of the community first. As an attorney I have gained a new and better perspective of what it means to serve others and it is a privilege I don’t take for granted.

The five pillars of income tax typically refer to the fundamental principles or components of the income tax system. These are:

  1. Income: This pillar encompasses all the sources from which an individual or entity earns money, including salaries, wages, investments, rental income, and business profits.

  2. Deductions: Deductions are expenses that can be subtracted from gross income to arrive at taxable income. These may include items like business expenses, certain healthcare costs, and charitable contributions.

  3. Exemptions: Exemptions are specific amounts of income that are not subject to taxation. They can vary depending on factors such as filing status, number of dependents, and certain circumstances.

  4. Credits: Tax credits directly reduce the amount of tax owed. They can be either refundable or non-refundable and may include credits for things like education expenses, child and dependent care, and energy-efficient home improvements.

  5. Compliance and Enforcement: This pillar encompasses the rules and regulations governing the filing of tax returns, payment of taxes, and enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with tax laws.

Tax law refers to the body of legal rules and regulations that govern the imposition and collection of taxes by governmental entities. Tax law encompasses various statutes, regulations, judicial decisions, and administrative rulings that dictate how taxes are assessed, collected, and enforced.
