John M. Cooper

Car Accident Lawyers

John M. Cooper is one of the founding partners at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers and a veteran of Virginia personal injury law practice. A native Virginian, he was raised in Norfolk and Virginia Beach by parents who practiced law. After graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1988, John returned home to work for a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Norfolk Division, which launched his passion for and career in personal injury law.

For over 30 years, John has worked closely with injured victims and their families and knows the long-term and devastating consequences that auto accidents, railroad accidents, traumatic brain injuries, and wrongful deaths can have. John also understands that catastrophic cases are complex and require extensive time, skill, and resources to properly litigate in court. This knowledge and experience has helped him to become a highly effective, results-oriented litigation attorney who has won millions and millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements for his clients.

In 2020, John and his team obtained the largest reported recovery in Virginia that year, $6,500,000, for a single car accident plaintiff who become quadriplegic after his accident. John’s other recent results include a $5,800,000 settlement for a traumatic brain injury victim and a $4,725,000 settlement for an auto accident victim who suffered vision impairment and multiple fractures.

Robert J. Haddad

Car Accident Lawyers

Bob Haddad has been practicing law since 1982. He attended the University of Louisville on a baseball scholarship and received his undergraduate degree in 1978. After playing a year of professional baseball, he entered the University of South Carolina Law School. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and did a clerkship with a Federal Judge in Norfolk, Virginia for one year. Obtaining a clerkship position with a Federal Judge is not only valuable as further education prior to beginning your legal career, but it is an extremely competitive position. Each Federal Judge is only allowed to hire two clerks per year. Only a select group of law school graduates are in a position to fill those clerkship slots every year.

After working in Federal Court for a year, he began his career with a local law firm in the Virginia Beach area. Three years later, he, along with several other attorneys from that firm, began the firm of Ruloff, Swain, Haddad, Morecock, Talbert & Woodward, PC. He has spent his career representing folks who have been injured either through automobile accidents, medical malpractice, or by some defective product. He, along with his partner, Doug Hornsby, were the attorneys in a medical malpractice case which resulted in the largest medical malpractice wrongful death verdict ever rendered by a jury in Virginia.

Jeffrey Breit

Car Accident Lawyers

While he was in college, Jeffrey Breit worked with a Federal Court Judge in New Orleans, fueling his interest in the law. As natives of the Tidewater area, Jeffrey’s father, brothers, and wife have all been attorneys at one time or another. In 1988, he left the firm where his father had practiced and (together with Jack Drescher) started “Breit, Drescher & Breit,” which later became “Breit Drescher Imprevento.” The firm focused on representing injured victims, something we still do today as “Breit Biniazan.”

After the April 20, 2010 BP/Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, Jeffrey began a stint working cases on behalf of menhaden fishermen. Hundreds of thousands of cases were consolidated in the Eastern District of Louisiana in New Orleans in MDL 2179. In October 2010, Judge Carl Barbier appointed 15 lawyers to the plaintiff steering committee in order to manage the litigation on behalf of all of the claimants. Jeffrey was appointed by Judge Barbier to the steering committee; eventually, he and seven members of the steering committee tried the case before Judge Barbier against the defendants BP, Halliburton, Transocean, Cameron, and others in what became the biggest environmental disaster in United States history and one of the biggest economic loss cases in history.

Joe says his favorite part of practicing law is, “when it is crystal clear that the client you are helping is in dire need of your services. You realize that if the two of you had not been brought together, this person would likely be making choices that would have severe adverse consequences for him or her. It feels really good when you can present an injured client with advice and a plan of action that puts him or her on the right path to a successful future, a new start, and financial security. Just knowing that the client is sleeping better at night—with fewer clouds of worry and doubt that were there before you came along— that helps me sleep better as well.”

Navigating the Aftermath: Why You Need a Top-Tier Car Accident Lawyer in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach, Virginia, a coastal gem known for its pristine beaches, vibrant boardwalk, and thriving tourist industry, beckons visitors with its irresistible charm. But even in paradise, unexpected events can occur, leaving you feeling shaken and unsure of your next steps. If you’ve been involved in a car accident in Virginia Beach, retaining a skilled car accident lawyer becomes crucial. This comprehensive guide explores the invaluable benefits of having a top-tier Virginia Beach car accident lawyer by your side, ensuring you receive fair compensation for your losses and navigate the legal process with confidence.

Understanding Virginia’s Fault System and Protecting Your Rights

Virginia adheres to a “fault-based” car accident system. This means the driver deemed responsible for the accident is financially liable for the damages caused. Understanding this system and securing the compensation you deserve necessitates a deep understanding of Virginia car accident law:

  • Know Your Rights: Virginia law allows you to seek compensation for various damages after a car accident, including medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, property damage, and out-of-pocket expenses. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer in Virginia Beach ensures you understand the full range of damages you can claim and fights for the maximum compensation you deserve.
  • Gathering Evidence: Building a strong case hinges on meticulous evidence gathering. A skilled attorney collects accident reports, police reports, medical records, witness testimonies, photographs of the scene, and car damage to support your claim.
  • Negotiating with Insurance Companies: Insurance companies often attempt to settle claims for the lowest amount possible. A seasoned car accident lawyer negotiates aggressively on your behalf, ensuring you receive a fair settlement that reflects the full extent of your injuries and losses.
  • Understanding Medical Bills: Medical bills after a car accident can quickly escalate. Your attorney can review your medical bills for accuracy and work with healthcare providers to negotiate reduced rates, minimizing your financial burden.
  • Understanding Virginia’s Statute of Limitations: Virginia has a strict time limit for filing a car accident lawsuit, typically two years from the date of the accident. Your lawyer ensures you meet all deadlines and file your claim within the designated timeframe.

Beyond Legal Expertise: The Qualities of a Top-Tier Car Accident Lawyer in Virginia Beach

Not all car accident attorneys are created equal. Here’s what sets the best Virginia Beach car accident lawyers apart:

  • Extensive Experience in Virginia Car Accident Law: In-depth knowledge of Virginia’s specific car accident laws, precedents, and insurance regulations is crucial. Look for an attorney with a proven track record of success handling cases similar to yours in Virginia Beach.
  • Focus on Car Accident Law: Experience matters. Seek an attorney who specializes in car accident law, ensuring they possess the specific expertise and resources needed to effectively manage your case and navigate the complexities of car accident litigation in Virginia.
  • Understanding of Virginia Beach Traffic Laws: Understanding local traffic laws and common accident zones in Virginia Beach can be advantageous. A local attorney may have a deeper understanding of these factors and how they might influence your case.
  • Compassion and Understanding: Coping with injuries and navigating the aftermath of a car accident can be physically, emotionally, and financially taxing. Your lawyer should approach your case with empathy, providing emotional support and guidance throughout the process.
  • Clear Communication and Accessibility: Clear and consistent communication is vital. A top-tier attorney keeps you informed on case developments, answers your questions promptly, and addresses your concerns openly and honestly.
  • Competitive Fees and Flexible Payment Structures: Many car accident attorneys work on a contingency fee basis, meaning you only pay if they win your case. Discuss fee structures upfront to ensure transparency and explore options that fit your financial circumstances.
