Actually, I didn’t exactly watch him– I ran around chasing foul balls, which could be returned for free snow cones to the concession stand. In the Mississippi summer heat, nothing beats crushed ice with sugary juice, the kind that makes your whole mouth turn blue or purple or red. We also played cupball, a game like baseball having a ball made from wax paper Coca-Cola cups. A Coke was fifty cents, so our cups came from the trash. It would take several to make a ball, and sometimes we put gravel inside for more weight. The balls fell apart regularly, but we just smashed the cups back together and kept playing. There is typically no bat in cupball, just the palm of the batter’s hand. The bases were anything at the park in the shape of a diamond—like the corner of the aluminum bleachers for first, a steal drum garbage can for second, a bare spot on the ground for third, and a glove for home.
