Alexis Binder

Alexis Binder is an associate at MeadLaw as part of their criminal defense team. Mrs. Binder joined MeadLaw in October 2019, after working for another criminal defense firm in the Baltimore area.
Mrs. Binder, born and raised in Harford County, went to University of New Haven and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelors in Criminal Justice, with a concentration in Forensic Psychology. While in college, she did an internship with a non-profit in Baltimore and worked hands on with the youth of the city, which influenced her decision to go to law school.
Following college, Mrs. Binder came back to Maryland and completed her law degree at University of Baltimore School of Law. While in law school, she participated in the Innocence Project Clinic and worked towards getting a client exonerated for a crime he did not commit. 4 Ways to Fight a Field Sobriety Test in a DUI Charge
1. Improper Administration by the Officer
Field sobriety tests must be administered according to strict protocols established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). If the officer failed to properly conduct the tests, such as providing unclear instructions or not considering medical conditions, the results can be challenged.
2. Environmental and Physical Factors
Factors like poor weather conditions, uneven terrain, and physical limitations can significantly impact a person’s ability to perform field sobriety tests accurately. If the tests were conducted under adverse conditions or the person has a medical condition affecting their balance or coordination, the results may not be reliable evidence of impairment.
3. Lack of Officer Training
For field sobriety tests to be admissible as evidence, the officer must be properly trained in their administration and interpretation. If the officer did not receive adequate training or certification, their testimony regarding the test results may be challenged and excluded from evidence.
4. Unreliable and Inaccurate Tests
The standardized field sobriety tests are not 100% accurate in predicting impairment. The horizontal gaze nystagmus test is only 77% accurate, the walk-and-turn test is 68% accurate, and the one-leg stand test is 65% accurate.
